Introducing our built bare short-block packages for those looking to get the meat and potatoes out of the way, and resume the build at home. All of our bare short block offerings come sleeved with our in-house designed sleeve's for factory bore sizing. All of our sleeved block's get torque plated by state of the art techniques to ensure your bore is going to be 100% true when heads are clamped down onto them. Bores have a plateau hone finish and require minimal break in time. Our torque plate finish bore procedure is catered to the specific style of cylinder head clamping hardware you will run. These engines CANNOT run a one size fits all torque plate procedure. We have measured variances of up to 0.0010" in distortion by simply changing hardware style.
An AMTuned built bare short-block consists of the following: Sleeved block, guide frame, crankshaft w/ bearings, main bolts, outer 6mm guide frame bolts, connecting rods w/ bearings, pistons w/ rings.
At AMTuned, we do not overbore 4.2L Audi engines. The reason being is that it compromises the structural integrity of the engine, especially on high output builds. The factory bore spacing is about 5.5mm, with a 1mm coolant passage within. This leaves roughly 2.25mm of Alusil block material between the coolant passage and combustion chamber on each bore which is not much. If we move to the next size up on bore sizing which is a 85mm bore, this removes a full 1mm of combined bore material on the bore spacing. The new measurements would be a 4.5mm bore spacing, with a 1mm coolant passage within, leaving roughly 1.75mm of material between the coolant passage and combustion chamber. Removing material on thin walled bores is never a good idea, and especially a bad one when running higher cylinder pressures on higher output builds.
